Insights into our approach to winning the toughest political and public affairs campaigns

How do we approach solving the toughest political and public affairs challenges our clients face?

Each firm has its own process. At HexaCom Group, our process is rooted in the three decades of experience of our Founder and President, Jeff Flint.

And yes, it is a six-point process – we call the HexaCom Advantage – that has been tested over hundreds of successful public affairs, political, and issue management campaigns.

The first step of any engagement is Research. Deep research. Not only qualitative and quantitative opinion research. Policy research. Stakeholder mapping. Past elections and issues. And the most important research of all; where is the client now, and where do they want to be? How do they define victory?

The next step is Strategy. We’re firm believers that Strategy beats Tactics, every time. Strategy involves charting the path to victory. And it’s rarely a straight line. It means taking a look at what tools in the arsenal are best suited for the mission. What messages and messengers will help define the issue on our clients’ terms?

After strategy comes Planning. This is where we turn the strategy into real, executable plan. This includes budgeting and assembling the right team for this unique challenge. It also means having the right management systems, including reporting and decision-making processes, in place. Strategy backed by good planning is the hallmark of a successful campaign.

Then, it’s time to Execute. Yes, Strategy is more important than tactics, but that doesn’t mean great tactical execution isn’t important. Executing a campaign strategy with precision and excellence is what this phase is all about. Crafting the perfect ad. Getting the media mix just right. Making sure the coalition calls get made and that key stakeholders are kept in the loop. Whether we’re executing with our own team, or a hand-selected group of vendors picked just for each campaign, we demand the best, and pay attention to the details.

Many firms stop at that point, but a HexaCom Group campaign knows that no campaign plan survives first contact with the enemy. And that’s why Evaluate is the fifth element of a campaign we manage. Circumstances will change. External events happen. Your opposition will do something unexpected. A message that research said would work...sometime just doesn’t. We’re constantly evaluating our campaign plans and execution to be sure we know what’s working, what’s not, and what to do about it.

And that leads to the sixth step of a HexaCom Group campaign...Adjust. Knowing something is not working, or that circumstances have changed, is only half the battle. You have to know whether to make a big change, and minor adjustment, or stay the course. And that is an expertise that takes decades of winning the toughest campaigns to sharpen.

Our process was formed over the years in the toughest ballot measures, issue and public affairs campaigns, candidates and independent expenditures. We’d love to see how we can help you win your next campaign.
